Grêmio believe they are close to capturing Napoli striker Eduardo Vargas on a season-long loan after São Paulo withdrew their interest in the player.

Vargas, 23, has been linked with a number of clubs over the past few weeks after it became clear that his immediate future lay away from Italy and had seemed set to sign for São Paulo.

However, Grêmio are believed to have offered Napoli better terms than São Paulo, who chose to pull out of the race rather than up their offer.

“Now, Napoli must manifest. I hope that by the end of the week it happens. I believe he is close to coming to Grêmio,” president Fábio Koff told Globo Esporte.

Grêmio plan to pay an amount for the initial loan deal and then put in place a purchase agreement for next December for the Chilean forward.

Vargas moved to Napoli from Universidad de Chile in January last year but has failed to adapt to life in Europe and now hopes to resurrect his career back in South America.
