Bayern Munich midfielder Luis Gustavo has undergone groin surgery and is unlikely to return before the end of the year.

The 25-year-old Brazilian, who last played in the league game against Hamburg SV two weeks ago, is looking to resolve the troubling problem once and for all.

It is unknown how long Gustavo will be sidelined for but the Bavarians fear he will not return before the winter break in five weeks’ time.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said: “It’s a painful loss. I don’t know how long he is going to be out for.

“He is an important player in my system and I hope to have him back as soon as possible. He’s been having a good season.”

The defensive midfielder has made nine Bundesliga appearances for the league leaders so far this season, netting three goals in the process.

The rest of Bayern’s squad departed for Valencia ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League game whilst Gustavo stayed back for the surgery.
