Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva returned to full training today at Melwood.

The manager also told the press ahead that the defensive midfielder could make a return to first team action in a matter of weeks after being sidelined with a thigh problem since August.

Rodgers told reporters ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Wigan Athletic this weekend: “Lucas Leiva will come back into training, which is great news. He has worked tirelessly in his rehabilitation, so he comes back out onto the field in a good moment.

“He won’t be ready to play for the weekend, but certainly over the next couple of weeks he’ll be very close.”

Lucas has been plagued with injury problems since rupturing a cruciate ligament in a League Cup clash against Chelsea iast season.

The midfielder attempted to make a comeback this season but could only manage two league games before sustaining a thigh injury.
