QPR boss Mark Hughes is hopeful that Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar can manage the elbow injury that has plagued the start of his career in England.

Hughes told reporters: “He manages it. Most players have manageable ailments. We’re not at the point where we think he needs an operation.”

The QPR manager revealed that the club would look to keep Cesar going until the end of the current campaign before going under the knife: “If he did then we would look at it at the end of the season. It won’t happen during the season.”

The Rs signed the Brazilian in August shortly after signing fellow keeper Robert Green, and the former England keeper is reported to be unhappy at the lack of playing opportunities.

But Hughes swiftly dismissed any concerns regarding his goalkeepers: “If in the future any of my keepers came to me and said they felt their future lay elsewhere then we can have a conversation about theat and make a decision that benefited everyone.

“But at the moment it’s early days and the challenge is there for all my keepers.”
