Brazil legend Roberto Carlos has hailed Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as one of the best in the world and claimed he would love to sign him for Anzhi.
Carlos, who is currently sporting director at Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, told reporters ahead of their Europa League clash against Liverpool: “Why not? He’s one of the best players in the world and any team would be happy to have him in their squad. He’s still a very young player.”
Although the former Seleção fullback conceded that if the striker was on sale, there would be no shortage of admirers: “Of course I could not say when, and if, it will happen. It’s not only Anzhi who want to buy him.
“There are plenty of teams in Italy and Spain, all over the world, who are eager to have a player like Rooney.”
Anzhi have been splashing out on some of the world’s top players in recent years, signing former Barcelona and Inter striker Samuel Eto’o and ex-Chelsea winger Yuri Zhirkov and Roberto Carlos says that such big money moves are a thing of the past:
“If the owner of Anzhi wishes to buy somebody, he will go and do it. But we are trying to change the image of the club. It’s not just about the money. Of course we are going to buy good players but not only international players. We want to buy good Russian players that are not that expensive.”
