“I am very sad to lose not only one of the best midfielders in the squad, but to see the dream of a great guy ruined,” said Lucas on his Twitter, referring to Wellington as his ‘big brother’.

“Surely God has something very special in store for him and he will soon be back, doing what he loves with the joy that he has always had. Have strength my brother!

“Always remember what I said, ‘it has never been easy and it never will be!’ All of us here in Sao Paulo are with you!”

Wellington, just 21, has suffered bad luck with injuries in his short career so far, suffering a set-back in 2010 when first breaking into the São Paulo team, Wellington also missed last year’s Under-20 World Cup due to injury.

“Very sad about what has happened to Wellington. Let’s hope and pray to God that it is nothing and he will come back as soon as possible,” said Casemiro on his Twitter.

Whilst new Spurs loanee Bruno Uvini said: “I was very sad to hear the news on the injury of Wellington. Have strength, brother. You are a warrior and will overcome this!”
