Given that the overseas sides had arrived just 24-hours before kick-off, there was always going to be an opportunity for the hosts to dominate in these opening games in sweltering Minas Gerais conditions and they took full advantage.

A late Washington goal helped Corinthians overcome Manchester United’s side, who included some of their Desportivo Brasil youngsters – on which they have first option.

Three Douglas goals helped Flamengo to a comfortable win over Vissel Kobe, whilst both host Mineiro sides opened with win.

Atlético have since followed up there opening win yesterday, by today overcoming Orlando Pirates 2-0, with goals from Yago and Carlos.
