The Brazilian club managed to open the scoring in the thirty third minute. A fortunate deflected pass from wing back, Allan, was met by midfielder, Bernando, who was able take control of the ball with his chest before striking home a volley in to the bottom corner of the net.
Coming out for the second half, Universidad were looking to pull back the equaliser. Attempts from Vargas and Rodriguez were denied by Vasco keeper, Fernando Prass, but ten minutes from time, the Chilean side finally managed to make the break through.
A freekick sent in by Marcelo Diaz found defender, Osvaldo Gonzalez, who made no mistake in heading home the equaliser, putting his side in a strong position for their semi final second leg in Santiago.
