The player has had fans calling for an end to his loan spell after three red cards in his first nine appearances for the giant Brazilian club and further alienated himself last week by calling the fans ‘very, very annoying’.

Adilson Batista, the São Paulo boss who is not having the easiest of periods himself, came out in defence of his player and branded the treatment he has received as unfair.

“He played a good game and he is a good player,” the São Paulo coach told Globo. “He tried to atone for his team-mate’s error and was sent-off.”

Casemiro’s backheel had fallen short of it’s target, which had provoked Denilson’s lunge for his second yellow card.

“For the first red, the ball had clearly left the field and he was sent off for dissent. Against Ceará he was below-par, but he was not violent”

“Denilson is working hard and has been a great example to the young players. It has been a pleasure working with him.”
