Lúcio has been omitted from the squad for the fixtures with Costa Rica and Mexico, whilst the Chelsea man has seen off the challenge of Vasco da Gama’s up-and-coming centre-back Dedé to win back the trust of Mano Menezes.

“There is greater responsibility when taking the place of Lúcio,” said Luiz in an interview with Globo. “The responsibility is great whenever you pull on the Brazil shirt, it is the best team in the world and the people are so passionate about football.”

David Luiz is not content with taking the shirt of his idol. He has idolised many Brazilian defenders over the years and now, he wants to set an example for a new generation to aspire to.

“Brazil has always been very fortunate in this position. I have admired Lúcio, Juan and Aldair,” Luiz admits freely.

“I try to learn something from all those who pass through the squad and now I hope to set an example for others to mirror.”

Brazil are expected to line-up with Mano Menezes’ original preffered centre-back pairing of Thiago Silva and David Luiz on Friday against Costa Rica, whilst at full-back Fábio da Silva and Barcelona’s Adriano will strike up a new partnership.
