Liedson, 33, has suffered with knee injuries since joining the club in January. After picking up his third yellow card of the season against Botafogo, and a suspension as a result, he will now go under the knife in the hope that he can finally make a full recovery.

“We care about this, so we determined that we should do the procedure," said Dr Julio Stancati. “We had protocol to remove him from training. Fortunately, the injury did not worsen [against Botafogo] but the risk was there."

Liedson scored Corinthians" first goal in their 2-0 win at Botafogo on Wednesday night, and currently has four goals in 2011 Brasileirão campaign. His return to fitness is likely to coincide with that of fellow striker Adriano, who is yet to make his debut for the club.
