Ronaldo has explained to Diego Maradona why he is coming out of retirement to play for North American Soccer League [NASL] side Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

The 38 year-old, who is a part owner of the club alongside the likes of Paulo Cesso, Rafael Bertani and Ricardo Geromel, is expected to feature at some point in the near future.

Speaking to former Argentina international Diego Maradona on his show ‘De Zurda’, which airs on Venezuelan television, Ronaldo confirmed his intention to play for Fort Lauderdale and suggested that he now has no physical problems, despite previous knee issues.

"I am going to play in the play-off games and for that reason I’m getting myself in shape," he said, as reported by website ca2015.

"Football in the United States is growing a lot and I think it’s a great opportunity to develop football. I am going to play for Fort Lauderdale. I don’t have any pain, the knee does not hurt me anymore.

"After 20 years of playing my body had suffered a lot, but the knee is okay now. I am going to train, lose some kilos and play in three or four matches… I’m really excited."

Ronaldo retired from playing in February 2011, following Corinthians’ elimination from the Copa Libertadores. The former Brazil international – capped 98 times – won major honours with the Seleção, as well as at Cruzeiro, PSV, Barcelona, Internazionale, Real Madrid and Corinthians.

Individually, he was named the Ballon d’Or winner twice [1997 and 2002] and has been awarded countless other accolades.
