Botafogo endured exactly the type of evening they had tried to avoid as they were thrashed in Argentina by San Lorenzo, finishing bottom of Copa Libertadores Group 2 into the bargain.

The Rio de Janeiro side went into the final group game knowing that a draw would most probably send them through but had spoken in the press prior to kick off about winning all three points to make sure of progression.

However, nothing went to plan for Botafogo and a first half goal by Hector Villalba was added to by a second half double coutesy of substitue Ignacio Piatti to send the Argentines through to the next stage on goal difference; Botafogo finished bottom of the pile on seven points, having scored a mere five goals in their six group games.
