Romário’s return to professional football is taking shape, after being registered as part of the America squad, the Carioca club he presides over. At 58 years old, he participated in his first training session in order to fulfill the great dream of this comeback: to play alongside his son, Romarinho.

“The greatest goal of all is to have the opportunity to play with my son. I read today that Lebron James has the opportunity to play with his son next season, Rivaldo has already had this opportunity, very few have had it and many have wished for it. And I’m going to have this opportunity,” said the champion with Brazil at the 1994 World Cup.

Several media outlets closely followed the practice session, which included a lighter session and shooting drills. Towards the end, there was tactical training on a smaller field, in which he was able to maintain his old habit of putting the ball into the net. “I’m very tired,” said the goalscorer who played for FC Barcelona and PSV, among other teams.

America competes in the second division of the Carioca Championship and has the great objective of ascending to the elite of the state’s football. The path to this goal begins to be written on May 18th next, against Petrópolis, which could mark Romário’s return to the pitch.

The expectation is that he may be able to play at least a few minutes and repeat what happened in 2009, which is so far his last professional match. To fulfill his father Edevair’s wish of seeing his son end his career at the club he was a fan of, the Baixinho played a little over 20 minutes with America.

Remembering Zagallo

Sambafoot Series launched a new documentary about the football legend Zagallo. Known as ‘Velho Lobo‘ and as superstitious as it gets, Zagallo helped shape what Brazilian football is nowadays — as a player and as a coach.

The first, second and third episodes are available on Sambafoot’s Youtube channel. Stay tuned for the upcoming releases as we keep telling this legend’s life story.
