Maicon de Oliveira was buried in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The Brazilian’s life was tragically cut short following a car accident in Ukraine on February 8.

He was laid to rest in the Jardim da Saudade cemetery, in the Sulacap district of Rio de Janeiro. His coffin was draped in a Shakhtar Donetsk flag, the final team for which he played following spells at both Flamengo and Fluminense.

A representative from the Ukranian club had accompanied Maicon’s coffin back to the country of his birth where friends and family paid their final respects to the former player.

The player’s father thanked Shakhtar for all that they had done since the fatal incident earlier this month. The club has also decided to pay the remainder of the player’s contract, which was due to run until 2015, to the player’s family.

“We can only reiterate their condolences to everybody that knew and loved the player and marvellous person. May his soul rest in peace,” declared Shakhtar in an official statement.
