Corinthians continued their bad start to the championship on Sunday as they were beaten 5-1 by local rivals São Paulo.

Some Corinthians supporters ran onto the pitch, apparently angry at their team’s woeful performance.

Corinthians have invested around $50 million in players in the past 6 months. The result gave the ‘Galaticos’ only one point from their first three games and put the pressure on Coach Daniel Passarella.

São Paulo raced to a three-goal lead in 16 minutes as goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni converted a penalty and Luizao and Danilo added further goals.

Striker Luizao and fullback Cicinho struck again after half time before Carlos Alberto scored an 88th minute consolation for Corinthians.

São Paulo coach Paulo Autuori, making his debut two weeks after resigning as coach of the Peru national team, appeared unimpressed after his side picked up their first win of the championship.

“I’d rather finish the championship well than start with a win,” he said. “After 30 years in this job, I know that this doesn’t mean anything.”

It remains to be seen if Passarella will survive the week. In a league famed for its merry-go-round of Coach’s. Such defeats are not usually tolerated. You can be sure that MSI and Corinthians board have discussed possible replacements.
