Malcom comes from a terrific season with Zenit, having played an instrumental role in their success in the Russian Premier League. The Brazilian winger finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 23 goals, which earned him a long-awaited return to the Brazilian national team.

The 26-year-old has been able to revitalise his career in Russia, following a lackluster stint with FC Barcelona. Even though his time with the Catalan club wasn’t the best, Malcom has no hard feelings on his former club. In fact, he’s grateful for the lessons learned there.

Malcom grateful for time at Barcelona

“FC Barcelona was the bridge that allowed me to join Zenit with a different status. I am truly satisfied with this progress in my career,” Malcom told UOL. The Brazilian joined the Cules in the summer of 2018 in a €41m deal from Bordeaux.

However, he only got to make 24 appearances, recording four goals and two assists before being transferred to Zenit in August 2019. While many claim the club didn’t have enough patience with him, the Corinthians product believes Barca were not unfair with him.

“My time at FC Barcelona was an intense learning period. I was supported by everyone and I am grateful for this enriching experience,” he added. “Today, as a father, I have a mentality totally focused on the well-being of my family. I strive to contribute to the national team in the best possible way and to help young players within my club.”

Malcom is enjoying a great moment in his career, having rediscovered his best form and receiving a call-up to the Brazilian national team for the June international window.

“I am extremely happy to come back and take this opportunity,” Malcom said. “From a very young age, I always aspired to join the national team. My previous experience was marked by sadness due to the pandemic. Today, I am determined to give my best for the team and to support the young players.”
