Seeing a goalkeeper score is unusual in football, but Toluca fans have gotten used to celebrate goals from Tiago Volpi. The Brazilian scored again in the 2-1 victory over Tigres last weekend and now boasts 13 goals in Mexico.

According to ESPN, Volpi is now the second goalkeeper with the most goals in Liga MX history, only behind the legendary Jorge Campos, who scored 46 goals but also played some games as a forward.

Since his arrival at the Diablos Rojos in the Apertura 2022, Volpi has scored 11 times in Liga MX and twice in the Leagues Cup.

In this way, he has already surpassed other goalkeepers who stood out in Mexican football such as René Higuita, Miguel Calero, and Federico Vilar.

“(Volpi) is someone who trains for it and is an example for me and our teammates to see that he wants to score goals. He stays to practice, and he is an example for everyone,” said his teammate Juan Pablo Domínguez.

“Tiago is known in the league. Since I faced him at Cruz Azul, I had a lot of respect for him. He is a very professional guy. An example for me and most people. He works twice as hard when things are going well and when they are not. He helps the young players, and that is important,” admitted Juan Escobar, who joined Toluca this year.
