Santos and Vasco share the spoils in a game marred by VAR

Three days after having two goals annulled against FlamengoSantos saw the VAR not on their side once again as it ruled in favor of Vasco for their two goals: one by Fellipe Bastos, at the end of the first half, another by Germán Cano, from the penalty spot, in the second. 

Just 20 minutes into the first half, Santos opened the scoring. Soltedo’s cross on the left was pin-point and landed on the head of defender Lucas Veríssio who headed straight home top open the scoring.  

With the advantage on the scoreboard, Santos were closer to scoring the second goal than getting the tie, but their defence was their undoing. 

After a corner kick on the rightFellipe Bastos left the ball free inside the area and positioned himself properly hit a beautiful volley.

The goal had to be rechecked by the VAR and was eventually given as a valid goal. 

The home team returned better for the second half and the second goal came just after 13 minutesMarinho scored a delightful free-kick from outside the box that left goalkeeper Fernando Miguel helpless as it went in. 

Once again, the Santos defense were caught napping and VAR intervened again. The VAR caught Alison’s hand inside the area.   

Cano stepped up to take it and leveled the scoring in the 73rd minuteThere were a lot of complaints about the penalty.  

Santos pushed on for a late winner but the game ended with both sides sharing the spoils. 

The result leaves Santos in 11th place while Vasco keep their spot in third position. 

On Saturday, Santos will visit Ceará for their next outing while Vasco take Athletico Paranaense the next day.
