What the club’s doctor says

Cláudio Maurício explained to Fantástico that six athletes were examined. And 1,200 injuries were found on the players’ bodies.

“We are talking about six examined athletes. Of the six, I observed at least 1,200 injuries in these athletes. The nature of the injuries speaks for itself. We have contusions, penetrating injuries, second-degree burns, injuries with permanent deformity. We have injuries that will not disappear, they are permanent scars,” he stated.

In addition to physical injuries, the professional also pointed out psychological traumas that will accompany the athletes for months.

“This is difficult to measure, but studies already show that post-traumatic stress has effects, has real somatic causes. It is not just how you react, it has hormonal changes in some brain segments that lead to changes in your routine,” he explained.

Fortaleza returned to training over the weekend and opened the practice to fans, who showed up in large numbers to demonstrate support.

The “Leão do Pici” requested and CBF changed the date of the next game. The match against Fluminense-PI in the Copa do Brasil is moved from February 29 to March 3.

Most critical case

With 13 points between his mouth and eyebrow, left-back Escobar represents the most critical case among those affected in the incident. Therefore, he will need more time to resume training.

“The situation of Escobar is heartbreaking, what he is going through in these first days. Initially, he was not even able to go to a more specialized hospital. He went to the nearest hospital and was admitted to the ICU until he regained consciousness and could receive the first care,” said Cláudio Maurício.

In addition to the points on his face, Escobar was also diagnosed with a head injury, as well as multiple injuries. The doctor also emphasized the psychological support provided by the club to the athletes.

“We are offering psychiatric support, with medication for those we believe have an indication at this time. And so we will try to gradually reintegrate them, but respecting each one’s pain,” he concluded.
