The 2020 Brazilian Championship has finally come to an end!
While it’s all celebrations in the Flamengo camp, it’s back to the drawing board for a number of sides.
Vasco, Goais, Coritiba and Botafogo all suffered relegation and would battle it out in Serie B.
As one would expect, all of the aforementioned sites would be looking to secure an immediate return to the elite of Brazilian football.
As plans and activities begin to shape up ahead of next season, it’s perhaps a good time to take a brief look at what went wrong for the relegated sides.
Vasco
Vasco finished their campaign with 41 points from 38 games. They had hope until the very last game but a final 3-2 win over Goais was not enough to see them through. For Vasco, it’s back to the drawing board and a whole new plan for the club in Serie B. Vanderlei Luxemburgo has already stepped down as manager and perhaps a new coach could help their fortunes.
Goias
Goias finished their campaign with 37 points from 38 games. Verdão were more or less undone by their poor defence all season. With 63 goals conceded this term, they had the worst defence in the Brazilian Championship and that was the major letdown for them this season. Reports say they will have a better budget ahead of next season and it will be high on their prirotity list to bring in new players, especially in defence.
Coritiba
Coritiba finished the campaign with 31 points from 38 games. They would be largely disappointed after suffering relegation just a year after they returned to the Brazilian Championship.
Coxa’s struggles in the league were largely based on their poor away record. In fact, they only recorded two away wins all through the season. Their season more or less crumbled back in November after a 2-2 draw with Internacional. After that game, Coritiba only won two out of their remaining 18 games and that poor run of form was the reason they suffered relegation.
Botafogo
Botafogo finished the season with 27 points from 38 games. Fogao are perhaps the most disappointing side of all the relegated teams this season. Nothing seemed to go in their favor and the inconsiency plagued them so much they used four different coaches in the just concluded season.
Similar to Goais, Botafogo’s defence was also nothing to write home about all season. They were just one goal shy of matching Goais as the side with the worst defence.
To go with, they went on the worst run of form in their history. From October 14 down to the end of the season, they only had two wins from 24 games .Botafogo also made some unwanted history with their relegation. Their demotion with four rounds to go saw them become the fastest Brazilian Championship winner to suffer relegation.
