Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has hailed the £67m signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson at Anfield, but has warned that the player might need a year to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Goalkeeper has long been considered a problem position for The Reds, compounded by Loris Karius’ costly pair of errors in this season’s Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Fowler is enthused by the signing, but has sought to cool Liverpool fans’ expectations, writing, “Signing , Brazil’s World Cup keeper – who is joined by fellow Brazilian Fabinho – puts down a marker,” in his Daily Mirror column.

“Everyone knows Liverpool’s weakness has been the goalkeeping position. That came back to haunt them with the mistakes of Loris Karius in the Champions League final.

“Alisson is undoubtedly a world class player, but the Premier League is tough. There will be times when he will makes mistakes.

“David De Gea took time to settle at Manchester United before becoming recognised as a great goalkeeper.

“Alisson’s signing was urgently needed. Liverpool have stood by Karius over the summer and pre- season, but the new campaign was always going to be brutal for the German.”
