Thiago Maia is the first Santos player to have a proposal to leave during the European transfer window in January 2017.
According to the information from Lance!, Zenit, from Russia, have already contacted Giuliano Bertolucci, agent of the 19-year-old midfielder. The Russians are willing to spend €18 million to sign the player in January. Santos are yet to be contacted by the representatives of Thiago Maia, but they’re willing to sell him. Santos hold 100% of the economic rights of Thiago Maia. However, according to the contract of the number 29, Santos must pass on 30% of the transfer fee to the player himself. In the middle of this year, Santos president Modesto Roma Júnior talked with Chelsea, who showed an interest in Thiago Maia. The conversations with the Blues, however, never evolved. During interviews, Thiago Maia has expressed his intention to leave the club only after playing the Copa Libertadores. Santos have qualified for the group stages of the competition. The club, in turn, recognizes the need to cash in and welcomes the possibility of negotiating yet another youth product. After winning the Olympic Gold medal with the Brazilian national team, the player was observed by several European clubs.
In addition to the Russians, Manchester United, Chelsea, PSG, Atlético Madrid and Juventus have already shown interest in signing the youngster. The board of Santos are awaiting an official proposal and does not rule out selling the player in the January transfer window. Even with the intention of keeping all starters at the club for the 2017 Copa Libertadores, the club’s board do not consider the possible exit of the midfielder as a bad business. After all, the transfer fee can prove to be a relief for the club, who have financial difficulties, and can be used to search for some new signings, aimed at the continental competition.
