In an interview with Italian media, Palmeiras coach Cuca revealed his desire to have a learning period with Italian coaches next year.
Very close to leading Palmeiras to their first Brazilian Championship title in 22 years, coach Cuca has attracted the attention of international media. In an interview with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, the Palmeiras coach said he intends to make a trip to Europe next year to learn new concepts with the continent’s coaches, especially the Italians, like Maurizio Sarri from Napoli. Cuca has a contract with Palmeiras until December and will only decide his future at the club after the end of the Brazilian Championship. Mauricio Galiotte begins his term as president of the club on December 15. In September, the coach also said that he intended to return to work in China next year. Cuca said: “It’s one of my 2017 projects. I want to make a trip to Europe to learn from the top coaches. I wanted to do this after my trip through China, but I did not have time. I follow Sarri, who did a great job with Empoli and then with Napoli. I would like to closely observe the work of Italian coaches.”
The coach of Verdão also talked about 19-year-old striker Gabriel Jesus, who’s eagerly awaited by European football. For him, the youngster, who will arrive at Manchester City in January, will still develop a lot and will be one of the ten best players in the world. Cuca said: “He may not be matured for England, but he is a starter for Brazil, and will be very important and will be a starter at City. You cannot think that at age 19 he is at his peak. He will still improve 30% or 40%. The field and the experience will give him more maturity. He will do this, not Cuca or Guardiola. In England, football is more tactical and he will learn many things, establishing himself among the top ten in the world. He is a young man with great technique, strength and speed. And he has a characteristic: he is very fond of physical confrontation and cleverly appropriates it.”
The former Atlético Mineiro coach commented on the tactical versatility that helped Palmeiras a lot in this year’s Brasileirão. According to him, having players who play various roles was fundamental to the success of the team. Cuca added: “You have to know how to help the team with more solutions. That’s why I like to build the squad at the beginning of the year by having players who can play multiple roles. I’m trying to get the most out of all the players.”
