Brazil’s goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel is relishing Thursday night’s Superclasico clash against Argentina in Belo Horizonte. The 1994 World Cup winner says the rivalry is as big as it ever was and the players should savour it.

“The feeling is the same, the rivalry is great, the will to win, to play well and continue this important run of form. The confidence is high, but we know it will be difficult because it is Argentina. They may not be in the top places but they are a great team and deserves respect, has great players and we will have to play very well to win.”

The Seleção returns to the Mineirão for the first time since the 7-1 defeat to Germany in the Mineirão in 2014. But Taffarel says that the players need to forget about that fateful day at the last World Cup.

“We came here to face Argentina, if we put that question on top of what this game is, it would be too much. That was in the past, it was not even against Argentina, if it had been it was something different. But we are focused here knowing the importance and the difficulty of the game.

“The fans do not go there to see the past, they want to see the present and the present has been very good, the Seleção is responding and the encouragement of the fans will be fundamental. We played in the northeast and this time we are playing here more to the South and we want the support here as well.”
