Brazil midfielder Paulinho has insisted that the Seleção “cannot rewrite history” as they shape up to take on Argentina in the Mineirão on Thursday night. The game marks Brazil’s first game at the venue since the infamous 7-1 defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final.

The result proved seismic for Brazilian football, but midfielder Paulinho says that will have no bearing on the players’ mindset when they play the Superclasico. Paulinho played in that match but he wants to look forwards, rather than back.

“There’s no way to avoid this. It’s natural. But I’m calm. These are completely different times. Football is like that, now we have a chance to rewrite that story. We are not going to reverse what has happened, but we can make a good impression this time.

“We have a new opportunity, a new Chance and hope to enjoy. We’re on a run of wonderful wins and we want to keep that up against Argentina,” concluded Paulinho, who has been reinstated in the national side since Tite’s appointment.

Gil, Fernandinho, Renato Augusto, Paulinho, Fagner, Lucas Lima, Rodrigo Caio, Douglas Costa and Alex Muralha have all arrived in Belo Horizonte for the game, with Gabriel Jesús scheduled to land soon. The Europe based players are expected to arrive on Monday.
