The renewal of Brazilian superstar Neymar at Barcelona became a soap opera in recent months, but it finally came to an end last week.
Both Neymar and the Catalan club announced that an agreement has been reached for a contract extension until 2021, which will be formalized when the player returns from the Olympic Games. Following the strong interest from other European giants, negotiations with Neymar had dragged on, and Spanish newspaper MARCA claims that Barcelona were forced to make him the highest paid player at the club. The publication points out that the 24-year-old will be paid €25 million per season, which is €3 million more than Lionel Messi.
The newspaper says that Barcelona did not intend to raise their offer to €25 million, but were forced to be more generous in the negotiations due to the astronomical proposal put forward by Paris Saint-Germain. The Parisian club would’ve promised Neymar a salary of €40 million per season, after he had turned down an offer of €30 million. The newspaper also says that Neymar’s father came to meet with the representatives of PSG and Manchester United.
Shortly after the official announcement of Neymar’s contract renewal, his lawyer Marcos Motta posted on Twitter: “The biggest contract in force in the history of football.”
