Benfica striker Jonas, the leader in the race for the Golden Boot in Europe, has been called to the Brazil squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Paraguay, following an hamstring injury to Liverpool attacker Roberto Firmino.
Brazilian football federation announced that Roberto Firmino was removed from the squad for the game against Uruguay in Pernambuco, and Paraguay in Asunción. A former player of Grêmio and Portuguesa, Jonas has 31 goals in 38 matches this season. In the Portuguese league, he has 28, making him the leader in the race for the Golden Boot, and stands in front of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuaín, Luis Suárez, and Lewandowski. Firmino, who missed Liverpool’s trip to Southampton on Sunday, was selected to replace Orlando City’s attacking midfielder Kaká last week. Jonas scored an injury time winner for Benfica, against Boavista, in the Portuguese Championship on Sunday, and will present himself before Dunga this week.
