Corinthians are waiting for the start of next week to get a response from Figueirense about their proposal of €3 million for 50% of economic rights of young striker Clayton.
With the 20-year-old in the sights of both Atlético Mineiro and Palmeiras, the board of Corinthians made it clear that they will not go into auction to sign the player. Corinthians have been monitoring the performances of Clayton since the second half of last year, but reached a point where they almost gave up signing him. At the end of 2015, the club was warned by agent Jorge Machado that the player should play in Europe, but this did not happen. Deputy director Eduardo Ferreira said: “We do not want to force Figueirense and are awaiting their response. If Figueirense accept what fits in our pocket, we can bring him here. We will not go up for an auction. If we need to do this, then he goes to another club. He’s a player that we welcome for some time.”
Atlético Mineiro were in advanced negotiations with Figueirense and believed that they would be able to announce the signing of Clayton earlier this week. However, Corinthians entered the race in recent days, and disrupted the plans of Galo.
