On the afternoon of Monday, Internacional attacking midfielder Valdívia underwent a successful knee operation in Hospital Moinhos de Vento and should be discharged later on Tuesday.
Valdívia started for Brazil’s Olympic team on Sunday against the United States, but had to leave the field after just 13 minutes with pain in his left knee. The 21-year-old was examined in Porto Alegre on Monday morning which detected a ruptured cruciate ligament. The injury is expected to keep him out for the next six months, and may even force him out of next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. After being informed about his injury, Valdivia’s father Francisco came to Porto Alegre to be close to the player. Valdívia is Internacional’s top-scorer this year with 19 goals, and following his injury, coach Argel has just four attacking options for the final stretch of the Brasileirão; Vitinho, Lisandro López, Taiberson and Álisson Farias.
