The crowd for Brazil"s friendly against Ecuador in New Jersey last night was smaller than the attendance in Miami for the Seleção"s match with Colombia.

In a stadium that has a capacity of over 82,000, around 36,000 witnessed the side"s 1-0 win over their South American rivals, with a goal from Willian yesterday.

By contrast, the 1-0 win over Colombia last Friday attracted a crowd of over 73,000, more than double the figure from last night.

The upper deck of seating was not open to the public, and according to one fan who spoke to Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, led to a muted atmosphere in East Rutherford.

"The fans are not excited. I am certain it is because of the 7-1 [against Germany, in the World Cup semi-final]", said Neusa Coelho, a Brazilian who has been living in New Jersey for the last 13 years.

The crowd yesterday was split almost evenly between Brazilians and Ecuadorians, with a few Americans in the crowd cheering for the five-times world champions.

Since the World Cup, Brazilian football is arguably at its lowest ever ebb. Billed as one of the favourites, their demolition at the hands of eventual champions Germany in Belo Horizonte served to underline just how far behind the leaders the Seleção Brasileira have fallen.
