Ronaldinho’s transfer to Querétao could change the future of Mexican football, it has been speculated by the country’s media.

Last week, the 34-year-old signed with the “Gallos” after having been linked to several clubs around the globe. Now, it is believed, or at the very least hoped, that the arrival of the former Barcelona star could attract other big names to the Mexican league, according to national newspaper Record.

According to the publication, Ronaldinho’s signing means that Mexican investment, from now on, will not only be in promising young stars, but established players with a proved pedigree.

This time last year, Querétao were close to going out of business and fell to the second division.

Now owned by Olegário Vázquez, who owns a string of hotels and hospitals, the club’s financial outlook is far more positive. That has been proved by the acquisition of Ronaldinho Gaúcho, a two-time World Player of the Year winner.

All the clubs hopes are banked on the Brazilian’s shoulders. It is hoped that his talent can take a club with very little national history to the final phase of the Mexican League, and perhaps even the Copa Libertadores.

Ronaldinho won his first Libertadores title with Atlético-MG in 2013.
