Santos defeated rivals Palmeiras 2-0 on Thursday night and after the match manager Oswaldo de Oliveira insisted they can win the league.

Peixe currently sit 5th in the Brasileirão standings, just five points off top of the table Cruzeiro.

And after goals from Bruno Uvini and Alison helped earn them a fourth league win of the season, de Oliveira told Lancenet that Santos can challenge.

He said: “Our plan is with this very goal. We very much want the best for Santos, the Libertadores, and who knows the title.”

An ambitious target but the form of the young Santos team has showed they are a match to be reckon with.

The Peixe boss does believe his young side has plenty of improving to do and expects they will continue to mature.

Stagnation is something de Oliveira doesn’t want to see, he added: “Mainly on the issue of maturity, that has to improve, I just spoke with them about that.

“You can not oscillate, you can not lose balance, which happens a lot with young players as we have this predominance over what happens.

“I want to emphasise the importance of the group, over 60% are young, maturing. As I always say, we have a cast training, they are graduating and gaining experience with the competition.”
