Through his Instagram account, Brazil striker Fred has spoken out about the World Cup and thanked fans for their support.

Fred has been the target of criticism among both fans and pundits following Brazil’s acrimonious exit from the World Cup.

The 30-year-old was Brazil’s first choice striker throughout the tournament and remained on the bench only for the third-place playoff match against Holland.

Following his efforts at the World Cup, Fred had a request for a ten day break before joining up with his club team-mates accepted by his club Fluminense. He will therefore miss the club’s next two fixtures before returning to train on the July 24.

On Monday night, he posted a photo to his Instagram account thanking his fans for their support and lamenting a World Cup which fell a long way short of his hopes and expectations.

“Unfortunately, the World Cup wasn’t even close to what we dreamed about and had worked so hard to achieve. The scars will remain but life goes on. Let’s search for the strength to start again. Thank you so much to the fans for the affection, my family for the support and everybody that backed me. I still hope to give you many happy moments in the future. God bless you all!”
