Fluminense goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri has refused to be too downhearted at his side’s loss against Gremio at the weekend and claims that the team from Rio de Janeiro are close to hitting the performance levels they need to move further up the Serie A table.

A 1-0 reverse in the Brasileirao on Sunday has left Flu in fifth place in the league table but only two behind current leaders Internacional after five games.

Cavalieri told the Brazilan press: “We came here with the goal of making a good presentation and win against Gremio. But whether you’re playing in Porto Alegre or Rio it is always a tricky opponent.”

“We were very organised, so much so that, even with a player less (striker Fred received a second yellow card), we continued to create. We do not accept defeat sometimes. Unfortunatley we could not get the result we wanted.”

Fluminense next host unbeaten Sao Paulo on Wednesday evening, giving them a quick opportunity to right the wrongs of the defeat at Gremio.
