Spanish newspaper Marca have reported that Barcelona striker Neymar will undergo a strict rehabilitation spell for treatment on his left foot ahead of a potentially title-decoding clash with Atletico Madrid on May 18.

The Brazilian star had been ruled out for the rest of the season but, with La Liga still undecided, could return for what would be Barca’s biggest game of a largely underwhelming term.

Spanish columnist Monica Bergamo told Marca: “Neymar was keen to play in the game but the people that control his career have persuaded him not to run the risk of mising the World Cup. Neymar’s team feel that he should be rested , even if he has fully recovered from the injury.”

Any club v country debate would cap a tumultuous season for the Brazilian, whose move to the Catalan giants was the subject of great controversy as Barcelona’s campaign progressed.
