Grêmio could not find a way past Newell’s Old Boys goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán on Thursday night as the Brazilian side played out a Copa Libertadores stalemate with their Argentinian foes.

The Group 6 match was not short of opportunities but it was Guzmán who was the star winning the man of the match award and was securing the visitors a valuable point.

Manager Enderson Moreira sent on Dynamo Kyiv loan forward Dudu as well as San Lorenz loanee Alan Ruiz to try and find a late winner for the Brazil side but it wasn’t forthcoming.

Grêmio’s famous number 10 Zé Roberto had to be subbed off as well after suffering an ankle injury but it isn’t expected to keep the 39-year-old out for longer than a week.

Despite the draw the Brazilian team remain in control of their group sitting pretty at the top of the table ahead of a tough away trip to Newell’s next week.

With three games remaining in the group stages the Porto Alegre club will expect to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Libertadores.
