Botafogo were denied an away point in the Copa Libertadores last night as they had two men sent off before conceding in the 90th minute to lose 2-1 to Independiente del Valle.
Fogão had looked on course for a point until Edílson and Bolívar were both handed red cards in the 74th minute.
Neither side was able to create any clear cut chances early on as the turgid conditions took some getting use to but with quarter of an hour played Independiente were unlucky not to be in the lead.
Henry León played a delightful chipped ball through the Botafogo defence, Junior Sornoza ran on and scored but the goal was wrongly ruled out for offside.
Ten minutes later and the hosts did take the lead through defender Christian Núñez. The Uruguayan ran onto another exquisite through ball by León before firing across Jefferson and into the net.
Independiente started the second period strongly with Angulo again going close before Botafogo grew into the game.
Wallyson sliced wide after cutting inside before he play his part in the equaliser as his corner was flicked on by Dória, which allowed Bolívar to stoop low and head the equaliser.
Botafogo were the more dominant side thereafter and Júlio César had a shot deflected wide before the key moment occurred.
Goalscorer Bolívar caught Angulo late and was correctly given a second yellow but hell broke loose after as both sets of players came together before Botafogo’s Edílson was given a straight red.
And with Botafogo holding on valiantly their resistance was finally broken as the talented Sornoza smashed in from 30-yards-out to win the match.
It was a stunning strike and the full time whistle followed soon after to leave the Brazilian’s disappointed but they at least know they are in control of Group Two.
