Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has won his first trophy in England after he played 90 minutes at Wembley as City defeated Sunderland 3-1 in the Capital One Cup final.

The Brazilian has won an illustrious list of titles during his time Shakhtar Donetsk, which included winning the Ukrainian Premier League six times.

The 28-year-old also won the FIFA World Youth Championship in 2003 with Brazil. However, the Capital One Cup is Fernandinho’s first English title and his first at new club Man City.

Early on it seemed likely that Sunderland would cause an upset after they went ahead through Italian Fabio Borini but blockbuster strikes from Yaya Touré and Samir Nasri turned the tide.

Before Fernandinho did what he does best by breaking play up inside his own half and allowed Touré and co to break and set up Jesús Navas for the third late on.

The Brazilian had spoken to City’s official website earlier in the week about the importance of the competition and how “it would be a good start here in England” if his team were victorious in Sunday’s final.

And so congratulations are in order for Fernandinho and he will now be targeting more success in his debut season in Manchester.
