Júlio César is not the only big name at Toronto. The MLS side also boast Gilberto, Jermaine Defore and Michael Bradley on their books.
The 34-year-old, however, was not attracted to Toronto by a big contract. He had other motives.
“I opened my mind up to all possibilities so that I could reach an agreement with my former club (Queens Park Rangers). All of this for a dream. The time has come to repay the faith that Felipão and Parreira have put in me.”
Luiz Felipe Scolari, the manager of the Brazil national side, took the unusual stap of confirming César in his World Cup squad nine months before the event takes place.
Subsequently, he sacrificed the comfort his family had of living in London in order to maximise his preparation ahead of this year’s World Cup.
“I didn’t have many options. Everything was welcome. I spoke to some Brazilian clubs but we didn’t reach an agreement. I also spoke with some European clubs. Toronto was a different option for me. Both the club and the MLS are growing.”
