Brazil’s number nine hadn’t scored since 7 August 2013 and admits that the last six months have been difficult.

Fred was a relieved man on Wednesday night. After a spell out with injury he returned to action to score Fluminense’s only goal in their 1-0 victory over Macaé in the Campeonato Carioca.

The striker scored with a downward far-post header in the first-half. The victory moved Fluminense to the top of the standings.

“It’s been a difficult six months but I kept fighting and working throughout. It’s good to have God by my side and he will continue to be by my side because I’m doing the right things,” said the 30-year-old.
