José Mourinho joked after Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Liverpool that David Luiz had picked up a booking deliberately during the match so he could go to Portugal for the New Year.

The Brazil international impressed in midfield for the Blues in their top of the table clash and described the win as “magic” but only after manager Mourinho has interrupted his post match interview.

The Portuguese manager gave his defender a big hug before jokingly telling the Sky Sports cameras that the 26-year-old got booked purposely so he can go on holiday.

“I’m making fun, but now he can go to Portgual!”

Luiz picked up his fifth booking of the season early in the second period and admitted that he didn’t realise he was on four bookings before the match.

“I didn’t know I had four yellows, but if he (Mourinho) says I can have some days off I’m happy of course.”

The smiling Brazilian defender has been in and out of the Chelsea side this season but insists the current Europa League winners can win the Premier League title.

Luiz also went on to praises the mentality in the team after they conceded just three minutes into the game against Liverpool.

“Of course it is not very good to (concede) a goal in the first minutes but there was a really strong mentality in the team.

“We gave everything on the pitch and it was magic tonight… we will keep fighting for the title.”
