Spanish giants FC Barcelona overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to defeat AC Milan 4-2 on aggregate in the Last 16 of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
Barcelona, who endured a tough time in Milan three weeks ago, came out firing with Brazilians Dani Alves and substitute Adriano helping the side progress to the quarter-final stage.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring for the Catalan side with a fine placed finish inside the first five minutes before repeating the trick later in the first half to cancel out the Italians’ first-leg advantage.
The second goal came immediately after a glaring miss from Mbaye Niang at the other end.
Milan steadied the ship initially after half-time but saw their hardwork undone as Xavi’s pinpoint pass found David Villa unmarked to add a third.
Milan brought on former Santos forward Robinho, as well as Bojan and Sulley Muntari, as they went in search of the goal that would swing the game back in their favour, but found themselves consistently thwarted.
The best chance of the second-half fell to Robinho who saw his effort from eight yards blocked by Jordi Alba. The latter would go on to deliver the killer blow to Milan, finishing off a counter attack in injury time following a Robinho mistake from a free-kick.
