Former Fluminense forward Maicon has expressed an interest in playing international football for Russia, having played for Lokomotiv Moscow since March 2010.

Maicon, 23, is a former Brazil Under-20 international and veteran of the 2009 Under-20 World Cup, but confirmed he would look to switch allegiance if the opportunity arose.

With his performances for Lokomotiv steady more than outstanding and his name having fallen out of regular media coverage in Brazil, Maicon is not thought of as being close to a call to the Seleção.

The striker, though, has other plans with Russia already having used foreign players to boost their ranks in sports such as basketball.

“I would play for Russia with great pleasure and complete desire,” he told Sport Express Daily. “Of course it is my dream to play for my country in a World Cup, but it is very difficult to get a place in the Brazil national team. There are many talented players and the competition is very tough.

“I would never refuse a proposal to play for Russia if I received one.”

In the rest of the interview, Maicon also praised the growth of the Russian championship following a recent surge of investment ahead of the country hosting the 2014 World Cup.
