Alessandro Del Piero has ended any rumours suggesting he could join Flamengo by signing a new one-year contract with Sydney FC.

The 38-year-old moved to Sydney last summer but was recently linked with a move to the Rubro-Negro, with reports suggesting that Zico was in talks with the Italian’s brother and agent Stefano over a two-year deal.

However, this was denied by Sydney CEO Tony Pignata and Del Piero has now put the rumours to bed by signing an extension with the Australian club.

The Juventus legend politely thanked the Brazilian clubs that had chased his signature, while joking about his “young age”, but revealed he was not tempted to move club again.

He said: “It was a big challenge for me, for my family, to take a long trip here and change everything in our life.

“My family and I have had a great time here. The weather, the city, everything is good. But first of all, I’m here to play.

“It’s a challenge. I work to win this challenge and I want to win again next year.”
