Real Zaragoza head coach Manuel Jiménez has revealed that the club tried to sign Internacional attacker Diego Forlán during the January transfer window.

The Uruguayan forward joined the Brasileirão club last summer following a fruitless season with Italian giants Inter Milan.

Jiménez believes the ex-Manchester United and Atlético Madrid front man would have been an excellent fit at the La Liga club, but financial restraints meant his wages were too high.

He told Aragon Radio: “I asked [president] Agapito [Iglesias] to sign Forlán .

“He was a good fit, a veteran player who was still a good reinforcement because he could have guaranteed us 10 goals, by the end of the season.

“It was enough to save us, but he demanded €2million net salary which we could not afford."

The 33-year-old has already netted three times in three Campeonato Gaúcho games for Internacional this year, after scoring five as his side finished ninth in the league last term.
