Flamengo are interested in signing Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero with the Italian unhappy with life in Australia after his move to Sydney FC.

Del Piero, 38, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, moved to Sydney last summer after leaving Juventus but has become disillusioned with life down under after the promises made to him over the team’s competitiveness has not come true.

Zico, who now is on the board at Flamengo, and new president Eduardo Bandeira de Mello are believed to have began talks with the forward over a two-year deal and Mello believes that Zico holds the key in convincing Del Piero to move to Brazil.

Sydney FC currently lie eight (out of 10) in the A League and, despite playing well himself, the Italian has been less than pleased with their recent form.

“This is new for me, different,” Del Piero said. “I’m involved with a team which has a great challenge. Our start is not good and injuries and losses are not good for us.

“Every game is like a final for us. It has to be. The last few games for sure is frustrating for us but it happens.

“We have to fix what is wrong and focus about each other and not about the rest.”
