Former Liverpool goalkeeper Alexander Doni has joined Botafogo SP on a free transfer, after his contract with the Premier League club was terminated.

The 33-year-old, who moved to Anfield in 2011, is believed to have agreed to mutual termination of his deal earlier today, which was due to expire in June.

Doni only made four appearances for the club after falling down the pecking order behind fellow goalkeepers Pepe Reina and Brad Jones.

The news of the move follows an interview with Brazilian publication Globoesporte last week, in which the goalkeeper rubbished reports of injury setbacks and claimed the real reason behind his lack of appearances was yet to be revealed.

The former Roma stopper has now returned to his boyhood club Botafogo SP, who compete in São Paulo’s Campeonato Paulista.
