Liverpool have sealed the signing of Brazil attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho from Inter for a reported fee of £8.5m.

Coutinho, 20, has passed a medical and will now join fellow teammates, including Seleção star Lucas Leiva, in training.

The Brazilian told the official website: “I’m feeling very happy, it’s a very important step in my career and I’m expecting to come here and play good football to give my contribution on the pitch.

“Liverpool is a great club with great players. We’ve always heard about Liverpool’s history in Brazil. They are the club that have been interested in me and that have showed this interest so I know they believe in me and my football.”

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will be hoping that the youngster will boost the club’s attacking options as they look to put their season back on track after crashing out of the FA Cup to League One side Oldham Athletic on Sunday.

Coutinho will wear the number ten shirt vacated by former player Joe Cole and reports suggest the youngster could be included in the squad to face Manchester City at the weekend.

The former Vasco da Gama forward arrived at the San Siro in 2010, but has failed to win a regular first-team place with the Nerazzurri, despite excelling during a loan-spell at Espanyol last season.

A technically-gifted player, Coutinho fits perfectly into Rodgers’ setup, who is looking to build a fast-paced, dynamic side at Anfield.
