FIFA president Sepp Blatter has offered support and ‘hope’ to the bereaved families and survivors of the tragic events in Santa Maria.

The president sent a letter to his Brazilian counterpart, Dilma Rousseff, offering their condolences to victims of the Santa Maria nightclub fire, in which more than 230 people died.

“Although the words are little comfort in the face of pain and anguish that this country is suffering right now, I want you to know that the entire football family is thinking of the Brazilian people in these sad days,” said Blatter.

“I would like you to know that, with 500 days until the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, our game is here to support people who are suffering through hope and positive emotions that accompany it, to carry them during these dark days.”

Campeonato Gaúcho fixtures were cancelled in the light of the events which sent shockwaves around the globe due to the severity of the incident.

Minutes of silence were also observed during the State Championship games that went ahead.
